Dr Sassafras, I'm new to this forum and, therefore, wish to apologize if I've missed a few threads along the way. I been running a Joomla site in test mode for awhile and have both the CCBoard and Kuena boards configured. So, as we're getting ready to go live, I knew I needed to select one or the other. That got me looking closely at the UI and the first thing I noticed was that on the CCBoard "post a message form" there was no checkbox (at the bottom) where the user would indicate that he wanted to be notified when replies were posted. On the similar form in Kuena, the feature was more prominently displayed. So, assuming that CCBoard was equally as sophisticated as Kuena, I went to your forums and found a few postings from you and Thomas. In short order I learned that the "subscribe to" feature is intended to provide the function I expected to see. Now, I can't say that I understood all the nuances of what you and Thomas were going on about (in terms of email notifications to topics and forums) but I did notice that some of the postings were pretty dated. So, my expectation is that whatever "deficiencies" they were referring to, have been corrected by now. My first piece of 'feedback' is that UI questions are about the "user's expectations", not the developer's. If users have more chances of experiencing VBulletin's or PHPBB's interface, and those applications use a checkbox AND an explanation at the bottom of the form, users are more likely to know what these features are intended to do. For me, now that I've found out that the "subscribe" radio button performs the function, I will know what to do with it next time I make a posting. But, I can see where the approach implemented by Kuena (to provide explanatory text next to the feature) only helps the users to know what to do. My second piece of 'feedback' is that, and this is subjective, I think that a Subscribe to (or contact me by email) checkbox at the bottom of the form is more typical of my user's experiences and would probably opt for that format most of the time. I noticed that on this copy of ccBoard there was a Subscribe button at the top and it confused me as I had not yet made a posting. I hope this feedback can give you some additional insight. For me, I've decided that CcBoard is the way to go (instead of Kuena) and will be looking to deploy it in the live site. If you wish to correct my conclusions, or offer some further explanations, feel free to. Thank you Mike Atlantic Webs |
